The best and worst performing asset classes of 2022
Overall, 2022 was the worst year for investors since the Great Financial Crisis in 2008.
Only investors in commodities generated a positive real return in 2022. Over the past 10 years commodities have delivered an annual return of only 0.2% making them the second worst asset class but they made a big comeback last year. Cash generated a positive nominal return of 1.3% driven by the rising interest rates around the world but the real return remained negative given the high inflation. Real estate was the worst-performing asset class in 2022 as a result of higher interest rates, a sharp decline in real wages and the slowdown of the global economy.
